About the Exponent Calculator
An exponent calculator raises a base number to a power. Exponents are repeated multiplication — the base multiplied by itself as many times as the exponent indicates — and they appear everywhere from compound interest to scientific notation.
How it works
baseᵉˣᵖᵒⁿᵉⁿᵗ means multiplying the base by itself that many times. A negative exponent gives the reciprocal (base⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ baseⁿ), and an exponent of zero always equals 1.
Reading the result
The result is the computed power, with the reciprocal shown for quick reference when working with negative exponents.
Note: Calculations run instantly in your browser and use exact mathematical formulas. For very large numbers, results are shown to standard floating-point precision.
FAQ
What does a negative exponent mean?
It means the reciprocal: 2⁻³ equals 1 ÷ 2³ = 1⁄8. The base flips to the denominator.
Why is anything to the power 0 equal to 1?
It follows from the rules of exponents: dividing equal powers (like 2³ ÷ 2³) gives both 1 and base⁰, so base⁰ must equal 1.
Can the exponent be a fraction?
Yes — a fractional exponent is a root. For example, 9^0.5 is the square root of 9. Use the root calculator for that view.
