About the Auto Lease Calculator
This auto lease calculator estimates monthly lease payments from a negotiated vehicle price or solves for the vehicle price that fits a target monthly payment. It models the core lease inputs used in real quotes: capitalized cost, lease term, APR or money factor, residual value, sales tax, fees, down payment, trade-in value, and mileage allowance.
Use it to compare lease offers, understand what is driving the payment, and see how changes in residual value, term, due-at-signing cash, or tax can change the total cost of the lease.
Capitalized cost
The vehicle price is the starting point of the lease. After subtracting down payment and trade-in value and adding financed fees, you get the adjusted capitalized cost used to calculate the lease.
Residual value
Residual value is the estimated lease-end value set by the leasing company. Vehicles with stronger residual values often lease better because less depreciation has to be paid over the term.
Money factor
Money factor is the lease finance rate. If you only have APR, a common approximation is APR as a percent divided by 2400. The calculator accepts either APR or a direct money factor input.
How the auto lease payment works
Most monthly lease payments are built from three parts:
1. Depreciation fee
This is the adjusted capitalized cost minus residual value, spread across the lease term. It reflects how much value the car is expected to lose during the lease.
2. Rent charge
This is the financing cost. It is commonly estimated as the sum of adjusted capitalized cost and residual value multiplied by the money factor.
3. Tax and upfront cash
Sales tax is commonly applied to the monthly payment, while fees, rebates, down payment, and trade-in value affect how much you pay up front and how much is financed.
Important lease factors
Mileage limits: Many leases include annual mileage caps such as 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 miles per year. Driving over the limit can lead to a per-mile charge at lease end.
Wear and tear: Returning a leased vehicle with damage beyond normal wear can create extra end-of-lease charges. Check your agreement for how the lessor defines normal versus excessive wear.
Why people lease: Leasing may reduce the upfront cash requirement and monthly payment compared with buying, and it can be attractive for drivers who like changing vehicles every few years. However, leasing usually does not build ownership equity and often comes with mileage and use restrictions.
Ending a lease early: Early termination can be expensive. Depending on your agreement, options may include returning the vehicle, transferring the lease, or buying the vehicle out if the economics make sense.
How to use this calculator
Choose whether you want to calculate monthly payment from vehicle price or solve vehicle price from a target payment. Then enter lease term, APR or money factor, residual value, tax, fees, down payment, trade-in, and mileage assumptions. Review the payment mix, adjusted capitalized cost, due-at-signing cash, and total lease cost to compare offers more confidently.

Auto lease calculator FAQ
Answers about lease payments, residual value, money factor, mileage, fees, wear and tear, and early lease decisions.
What determines a car lease payment?
The biggest drivers are adjusted capitalized cost, residual value, lease term, money factor or APR, sales tax, and any cash due at signing such as down payment or fees.
How do I convert APR to money factor?
A common shortcut is APR as a percent divided by 2400. For example, 6.0% APR is about 0.00250 as a money factor.
What is residual value in a car lease?
Residual value is the estimated value of the vehicle at the end of the lease. A higher residual value usually lowers the depreciation portion of the payment and can make a lease more affordable.
What is adjusted capitalized cost?
Adjusted capitalized cost is the negotiated vehicle price plus financed fees, minus down payment, rebates, and trade-in credit. It is one of the main numbers used to calculate the lease payment.
Is a larger down payment always better on a lease?
Not always. A larger down payment can reduce the monthly payment, but it also increases the cash tied up at signing. Some shoppers prefer to keep more cash and accept a higher monthly payment.
Does mileage affect lease cost?
Yes. Lease contracts usually include a mileage allowance. If you expect to exceed it, the effective cost of the lease can rise because excess-mile fees may be due at the end of the contract.
Does this calculator include wear-and-tear or disposition fees?
No. The calculator helps estimate the core monthly payment and major lease components. It does not automatically add every possible end-of-lease fee, disposition charge, or wear-and-tear penalty.
Can this calculator help compare leasing vs. buying?
Yes. It helps you understand the payment structure and total lease cost so you can compare a lease with an auto loan or cash purchase more clearly, especially when evaluating monthly budget and upfront cash requirements.
