What to solve for
Pick the value to calculate — the rest become your inputs.
Amounts
Your starting balance, the target you are aiming for, and how much you add each period.
Return & time
Expected annual return, how often it compounds, the investment length, and when contributions are made.
Starting with $20,000 and adding $400.00/mo at 6% for 15y grows to $162,696 — $72,000 contributed and $70,696 earned in interest.
What you pay
Principal vs. interest vs. fees.
Balance over time
How your loan balance falls as you repay.
Amortization schedule
Every payment split into principal and interest, with your balance falling to zero. Switch between the month-by-month view and a yearly summary.

About the Investment Calculator
This investment calculator projects how money grows with compound returns and regular contributions — and it can work backwards. Pick what to solve for: the end balance (future value), the starting amount you would need, the contribution required, the return rate required, or how long it would take to reach a target. Enter the remaining values and the calculator returns the answer plus a full breakdown of contributions versus interest and a year-by-year accumulation schedule.
Compound growth and contributions
Two forces build wealth here: your contributions and the compound return earned on the whole balance, including past gains. Early on, contributions dominate; over long horizons, interest can outgrow everything you put in. Adding money regularly (dollar-cost averaging) and leaving it invested longer both magnify the result, which is why the schedule and the contributions-vs-interest donut are worth studying.
Choosing a return rate
The return rate is the biggest unknown. As a guide, the S&P 500 has historically averaged roughly 10% a year before inflation and about 6–7% after it; diversified portfolios with bonds and cash sit lower. A conservative estimate (4–7%) avoids under-saving. Remember the average hides big year-to-year swings — real returns are volatile, so treat any projection as a planning estimate, not a promise.
Using it as a goal planner
Beyond future value, the solve-for options turn this into a goal planner: find the monthly contribution needed to reach a number by a date, the return rate a target implies, or the years required at your current savings rate. Compounding frequency and whether contributions land at the beginning or end of each period both nudge the result — beginning-of-period contributions grow slightly more because they are invested sooner.

⚠ Disclaimer: This investment calculator is for general education and planning only and is not investment advice. Projections are hypothetical, assume a fixed return and level contributions, and do not account for taxes, fees, or inflation unless you adjust the rate yourself. Investment Calculator FAQ
What can this investment calculator solve for?
It can solve for the end balance, the starting amount needed, the contribution needed, the return rate needed, or the investment length needed. Choose the variable from the “Solve for” menu and enter the rest.
How is the end balance calculated?
Your starting amount grows by the compound return over the period, and each contribution earns return from when it is added. The calculator builds the balance period by period, then totals your contributions and the interest earned on top.
What return rate should I use?
Use a rate that matches your asset mix. Historically the S&P 500 has averaged about 10% before inflation and 6–7% after; diversified portfolios are lower. A conservative figure such as 4–7% reduces the risk of under-saving.
Does compounding frequency matter?
Somewhat. More frequent compounding (monthly or daily) produces slightly more than annual compounding at the same nominal rate. Continuous compounding is the theoretical maximum and is often used for stock-market style returns.
Should contributions be at the beginning or end of the period?
End of period is the standard assumption and is the default. Beginning-of-period contributions are invested sooner, so they grow a little more and produce a higher ending balance.
Does it account for taxes, fees, or inflation?
Not directly. To approximate them, lower your return rate — for example, subtract your expected inflation rate to see results in today’s purchasing power, or trim a percent for fees.
Is this investment calculator free?
Yes. It is free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
