About the Depreciation Calculator

This calculator estimates accounting depreciation using straight-line, declining balance, and sum-of-the-years’ digits methods. It returns annual depreciation, accumulated depreciation, book value, and a year-by-year schedule.

Depreciation: Depreciation allocates an asset’s cost over its useful life. Different methods usually depreciate the same total amount over time, but the timing of expense changes.

Straight line

Spreads depreciable cost evenly across the useful life.

Declining balance

Accelerates depreciation by applying a factor to the beginning book value.

Sum of years’ digits

Uses a declining fraction to recognize more depreciation earlier in the asset’s life.

How to use this calculator

Enter asset cost, salvage value, depreciation years, method, and optional partial-year convention. Review annual depreciation, accumulated depreciation, ending book value, and schedule rows.

⚠ Disclaimer: This is an educational accounting estimate. Tax depreciation, MACRS, Section 179, bonus depreciation, local rules, and accounting policies may require different treatment. Ask a qualified accountant or tax professional.
