About the Roth IRA Calculator
A Roth IRA is an individual retirement account funded with after-tax money. You do not get a tax deduction when you contribute, but your investments grow tax-free and qualified withdrawals in retirement are completely tax-free. This Roth IRA calculator projects your balance at retirement and shows how much of it is your own contributions versus tax-free investment growth.
How Roth IRA growth is calculated
Your current balance and each annual contribution are compounded monthly at your expected return until your retirement age. Because the account grows tax-free, every dollar of growth stays in the account — there is no annual tax drag and no tax on qualified withdrawals after age 59½, provided the account has been open at least five years.
Roth IRA vs. traditional IRA
The core difference is when you pay tax. A Roth IRA uses after-tax contributions and gives tax-free withdrawals, which is attractive if you expect to be in the same or a higher tax bracket in retirement. A traditional IRA gives a tax deduction now but taxes withdrawals later. Many savers hold both to diversify their future tax exposure.
Contribution and income limits
For 2026 the IRA contribution limit is $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older, across all your IRAs combined. Roth IRAs also have income limits that begin to phase out eligibility at higher incomes. Enter a contribution within these limits for a realistic projection.
Why start early
Because growth compounds tax-free, time is the most powerful factor in a Roth IRA. Starting in your twenties or thirties can mean decades of untaxed compounding, so the growth portion often dwarfs the total contributed. Try lengthening the timeline in the calculator to see the effect.

Roth IRA Calculator FAQ
How much will my Roth IRA be worth?
It depends on your contributions, return, and years invested. The calculator compounds your balance and annual contributions monthly to project a tax-free balance at your retirement age.
Are Roth IRA withdrawals really tax-free?
Qualified withdrawals are tax-free if you are at least 59½ and the account has been open for at least five years. Your contributions can generally be withdrawn any time without tax or penalty.
What is the Roth IRA contribution limit for 2026?
The 2026 limit is $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older, combined across all your IRAs. Roth eligibility also phases out at higher incomes.
Should I choose a Roth or traditional IRA?
A Roth is generally better if you expect your tax rate to be the same or higher in retirement; a traditional IRA can be better if you expect a lower rate later. Many people use both.
Does a Roth IRA have required minimum distributions?
No. Unlike traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, Roth IRAs have no required minimum distributions during the original owner\u2019s lifetime, so the money can keep growing tax-free.
Can I contribute every year?
Yes, as long as you have earned income and stay within the annual contribution and income limits. The calculator assumes the same annual contribution each year.
Is investment growth guaranteed?
No. The projection uses a constant average return, but real returns fluctuate and can be negative in some years. Treat the result as an estimate.
Is this Roth IRA calculator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
