About the Estate Tax Calculator
This calculator estimates federal estate tax by adding major asset categories, subtracting debts and deductions, adding lifetime taxable gifts, applying the selected federal exclusion amount, and estimating tax on the amount above the exclusion.
Gross estate
Assets can include real estate, investments, bank accounts, vehicles, retirement plans, life insurance, business interests, and other property.
Deductions
Debts, funeral and administration expenses, charitable contributions, state estate taxes, and marital transfers may reduce the taxable estate.
Federal exclusion
Only the amount above the federal exclusion is estimated as federally taxable in this simplified model.
How to use this calculator
Enter estimated fair market values for assets, then subtract liabilities and deductible transfers. Select the year of death to use the appropriate planning exclusion amount. Review gross estate, net estate, taxable estate, and estimated federal estate tax.
Estate tax vs. inheritance tax
Estate tax is assessed on the estate before distribution. Inheritance tax is assessed on the beneficiary who receives property, and it depends on state law and the beneficiary’s relationship to the deceased.
