About the Savings Goal Calculator

This savings goal calculator turns a target into a plan. Enter what you are saving for, what you have already, and either how much you can save each month or the deadline you are aiming for. It shows the time to reach your goal (or the monthly amount a deadline requires), a progress bar that splits your goal into what you have saved, what you will contribute, and the interest earned, and a chart of your balance climbing toward the goal line.

Two ways to plan

In time-to-goal mode you set a comfortable monthly amount and see how long the goal takes. In monthly-needed mode you set a deadline and the calculator works out the saving required to get there. Switching between them is the fastest way to balance an ambitious target against a realistic budget.

How interest and tax factor in

Your balance grows each month from contributions and from interest on what is already saved. A higher rate (APY) or a longer timeline lets compounding do more of the work, shrinking the share you have to contribute. If the account is taxable, entering a tax rate trims the effective interest; for an ISA, Roth, or other tax-free account, leave it at zero.

Tips to reach a goal faster

Increase the monthly amount even slightly — the progress bar shows how quickly the contribution share grows. Move savings to a higher-yield account so interest carries more of the load, automate transfers so saving happens before spending, and revisit the plan whenever your income or the target changes.

Important disclaimer

⚠ Disclaimer: This savings goal calculator is for general education and planning only and is not financial advice. It assumes a constant rate, level monthly saving, and no withdrawals. Real savings rates (APY) are variable and can change, and actual results depend on your account and discipline. Use it as a planning guide alongside a budget and emergency fund.

Savings Goal Calculator FAQ

How does the savings goal calculator work?

Enter your goal, current savings, interest rate, and either a monthly amount or a deadline. The calculator grows your balance month by month — adding interest and your contribution — until it reaches the goal, then reports the time or the monthly amount needed.

What does the progress bar show?

It splits your goal into three parts: what you have saved already, the contributions you will add, and the interest earned along the way. Together they fill the bar to 100% of your target.

Should I enter the interest rate or APY?

Enter the annual rate your account earns (APY is fine). The calculator compounds it monthly. For comparing accounts, APY is the most accurate figure because it already includes compounding.

Do I need to include tax?

Only if the account is taxable. Tax reduces the interest you keep, so entering a rate gives a more realistic timeline. For tax-free accounts, leave it at zero.

How can I reach my goal faster?

Raise your monthly saving, choose a higher-yield account, or extend the timeline. Even a small increase in the monthly amount noticeably shortens the time, as the progress bar makes clear.

What if my goal is not reachable at my current pace?

If the monthly amount and rate cannot reach the goal within a very long horizon, the calculator will not return a time — increase the monthly saving or the rate, or lower the target.

Is this savings goal calculator free?

Yes. It is free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
