About the Height Calculator

This height calculator predicts a child's likely adult height using the mid-parental method, which is based on the heights of both biological parents. Genetics is the biggest single factor in adult height, so parent heights give a useful estimate — though nutrition, health, and environment also play a role.

How it works

The mid-parental formula averages the parents' heights and adjusts for the child's sex: for a boy, add about 13 cm (5 inches) before halving; for a girl, subtract it. Most children reach an adult height within roughly 8.5 cm (3.3 inches) of this estimate.

Reading the chart

You get a single predicted height plus the likely range it usually falls within.

FAQ

How accurate is the prediction?

It gives a reasonable central estimate, but actual height commonly varies by several centimetres in either direction due to nutrition, health, and individual genetics.

Does it work for children of any age?

The mid-parental method estimates final adult height regardless of current age, since it relies on parent heights rather than the child's current measurements.

What else affects adult height?

Nutrition, sleep, general health, and hormones during growth all matter. Persistent concerns about growth are best raised with a pediatrician.
