About the Slope Calculator

A slope calculator finds the steepness of the line between two points, along with the line’s equation, angle, and the distance between the points. Slope is the heart of linear equations and appears throughout algebra and geometry.

How it works

Slope m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) — the rise over the run. The y-intercept is b = y₁ − m·x₁, giving the line equation y = mx + b. A vertical line (x₂ = x₁) has an undefined slope.

Reading the result

The result is the slope, with the full line equation, the angle of incline in degrees, and the straight-line distance between your two points.

Note: Calculations run instantly in your browser and use exact mathematical formulas. For very large numbers, results are shown to standard floating-point precision.

FAQ

What does a negative slope mean?

The line falls from left to right. A positive slope rises, zero is flat, and an undefined slope is a vertical line.

Why is a vertical line undefined?

Because the run (x₂ − x₁) is zero, and dividing by zero has no value. Vertical lines are written as x = a constant.

How is the angle calculated?

It is the arctangent of the slope, converted to degrees — the angle the line makes with the horizontal.
